Another piece to the Crisis Puzzle

If we let ourselves, we shall always be waiting for some distraction or other to end before we can really get down to our work.    Sometimes we think we must do great deeds in order to change the world, or at least I do. I feel so limited by my small realm of influence yet I feel comforted by Edmund Burke's quote

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

It is so easy for us to be distracted by school work, earning money, books we just have to read, keeping up with the latest fashion, gossiping about neighbors and allowing the world to pass us by. C.S Lewis had much to say about this in his book "The Screwtape Letters" as he shares communications from a chief devil to his nephew. This quote comes from the letter concerning distractions. I feel it very significant how a devil describes the road to hell.


 "You can make him waste his time not only in conversation he enjoys with people whom he likes, but in conversations with those he cares nothing about on subjects that bore him. You can make him do nothing at all for long periods. You can keep him up late at night, not roistering, but staring at a dead fire in a cold room. All the healthy and outgoing activities which we want him to avoid can be inhibited and nothing given in return, so that at last he may say, as one of my own patients said on his arrival down here, “I now see that I spent most of my life in doing neither what I ought nor what I liked”. The Christians describe the Enemy as one “without whom Nothing is strong”. And Nothing is very strong: strong enough to steal away a man’s best years not in sweet sins but in a dreary flickering of the mind over it knows not what and knows not why, in the gratification of curiosities so feeble that the man is only half aware of them, in drumming of fingers and kicking of heels, in whistling tunes that he does not like, or in the long, dim labyrinth of reveries that have not even lust or ambition to give them a relish, but which, once chance association has started them, the creature is too weak and fuddled to shake off.

Don't allow yourself to be distracted from the changes taking place in the world today. Take time to serve a neighbor or to learn something new today. With all the negative hype concerning our police officers, take time to express your appreciation for sacrificing time with their families to keep the streets a little safer, even when they ticket you for speeding, they do it because high speed collisions are messy things. We are blessed to  have people who are willing to go into harms way for our protection.

Do not allow yourself to come to the end of an era only to realize that you have let moments of appreciation, learning and growth to pass you by doing as the man in the letter said "doing neither what I ought nor what I liked..." that is a painful regret to face. As I was reminded today, if you live your standards, be proactive and follow the Spirit you will never regret where life may take you.

This Land



This is a land given by God, prepared for his people that we might learn of his precepts and love our fellow man. In 2 Nephi 10-12 we learn:

 10 But behold, this land, said God, shall be a land of thine inheritance, and the Gentiles shall be blessed upon the land.
 11 And this land shall be a land of liberty unto the Gentiles, and there shall be no kings upon the land, who shall raise up unto the Gentiles.
 12 And I will fortify this land against all other nations.
 13 And he that fighteth against Zion shall perish, saith God.
 14 For he that raiseth up a king against me shall perish, for I, the Lord, the king of heaven, will be their king, and I will be a light unto them forever, that hear my words.

We truly have been blest to live in this land, to live free from the tyranny of other countries. Here are the words of Francis Scott Key:

 Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Many men and women have given their lives for this country, tonight I would like to talk about a specific group of men that gave their livelihoods and their lives because they knew this was not a land for Kings, this is a land of liberty. 
   We should all know that independence was declared July of 1776, that is the easy date, what most people don't know is that after this declaration none of the states wanted to play well with each other. We had an army, but none of the political entities of the time wanted to pay them. Fast forward to Christmas time of 1776, George Washington had an army, but with the interim Congress not wanting to pay the men or for supplies the army was starving and freezing to death. Enter Thomas Paine's The American Crisis and George Washington's brilliant plan.

Within days of Thomas Paine's article being published Washington had it read to all his troops and it brought hope to a discouraged people. Then Washington presented what was at the considered a ludicrous plan. He proposed crossing the Delaware in a surprise attack against the Huns.

George Washington's crossing of the Delaware River, which occurred on the night of December 25–26, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, was the first move in a surprise attack organized by George Washington against the Hessian forces in Trenton, New Jersey on the morning of December 26. Planned in partial secrecy, Washington led a column of Continental Army troops across the icy Delaware River in a logistically challenging and dangerous operation. Other planned crossings in support of the operation were either called off or ineffective, but this did not prevent Washington from surprising and defeating the troops of Johann Rall quartered in Trenton. The army crossed the river back to Pennsylvania, this time laden with prisoners and military stores taken as a result of the battle.

These men faced icy dangers in order to score a victory which would allow them to fight against tyranny for another day.

We now face a fight against tyranny, a fight for control of our streets and our rights. We don't face an icy river, but we face a time when men's hearts have grown cold. Get to know your neighbor, learn about your community, create ties with those around you and share the love of God with all you meet. God will not allow a king upon this land, we must do our part to keep this land a land of the free and of the brave, we must be the brave ones. Until we allow love, not hatred to rule our lives we allow a partisianed government to play us off of each other and keep us distracted from their agenda. Don't ever forget the price paid for the blessing we now hold.

As we enjoy this sweet Christmas time let us share the love of our Savior with those around us and remember the men and women through the ages that have given much for what we now have.

Strong Nations require Strong Morals


December 23, 1776-Thomas Paine

"THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated. Britain, with an army to enforce her tyranny, has declared that she has a right (not only to TAX) but "to BIND us in ALL CASES WHATSOEVER" and if being bound in that manner, is not slavery, then is there not such a thing as slavery upon earth. Even the expression is impious; for so unlimited a power can belong only to God."

These truly are the times trying men's souls, trying their faith in humanity and more importantly their faith in God. Many in the country today claim that the country was not founded on Judeo-Christian principles, but that the Founders were simply seeking for gain. Any group of men facing hanging or drawn-and-quartering weren't seeking wealth, instead they were lead on by higher ideals, a hope for a nation where God could reign supreme. As the words of Thomas Paine states only Heaven knows how to set the right price on freedom, a celestial article. Not only did Thomas Paine recognize these facts, for facts they are, George Washington had some things about God and a political system as well, here are his words.

We as a nation can no longer allow political correctness deny us our faith and beliefs, and no I'm not just talking about Merry Christmas vs Happy Holidays, debate although...Merry Christmas!!!!! But the fact we allow minorities to dictate policy even though Christianity is a majority and we know we need God in our lives.

The USA is a covenant Christain nation. We are one nation under God. The Christian majority is the largest group in America (~75%, 2012 polling). Christians uniting in Christ is our nation’s source of unity. Keep in mind that we must all respect the belief systems of others and to allow love to be the forefront of our message. I just spent the last semester of my life learning about toleration. Never "tolerate someone" toleration is just the other side of the coin from persecution. You tolerate flies, you respect and seek to understand the lives from others. This Christmas season I would encourage each of us to get to know someone new. Learn about their beliefs and the things they care about. Even if you don't believe as they do, remember that Christ is at the heart of Christianity and his message was one of love, not hate or otherness.

Our souls are tried each day as the mores of society, our morality is being called into question and denigrated, stand up for your faith, whether Christian, Jew, Muslim, Sikh or Atheist, we love everyone and ask that you accord us to believe as we chose, just as the Constitution guarantees us each this right. If we don't stand up for our faith there will come a day when the government will push into our places of worship and demand we give up the things we hold most dear. Take the opportunity to write to or call your representative  and tell them that the government needs religion to maintain a moral and strong nation. I hope each of us can live our standards each day and lend strength to this great nation.

What's the Problem with Being different?





Dear World,
    I participated in a bit of a social experiment last night at a Christmas party. I say I participated in, but really and accidentally I was the social experiment. I showed up to the party in bright pink shining pajama's. I had been asked to come prepared to share about my experiences in Cambodia working with Vietnamese people. In Cambodia there was an interesting older woman who adopted me and made me these pj's needless to say I'm rather proud of them and have very fond memories associated with them. So when asked to share about my time in Cambodia they came to mind pretty fast.
    Now I realize that everyone else was wearing normal everyday cloths, one or two had ventured out to more festive attire such as Santa Hats, but for the most part I stood out like a sore thumb, okay I shone like Rudolf the Reindeer's Nose and pretty much everyone noticed. Most people simply accepted it as part of my occasionally quirky personality, but others not so much. They came to me and asked if there was a reason for the bright pink, once I told them I was part of the presentation they laughed and went on their way, but there was one person's remark which has stayed with me, she said, "are you part of the entertainment? Because if not I feel bad for you..." Part of me understood exactly where she was coming from, a certain amount of decorum is expected and should be respected, but the other part of me felt hurt. What business is it of anyone else what I'm wearing, no I wasn't trying to make a statement and I wasn't dancing at the front of the room trying to get everyone's attention, I was simply wearing something that brought back special memories.
    I'm not sharing this experience to make anyone feel guilty or share my pet peeves about clothing. I am however sharing this to invite people to ponder, have social norms and political correctness become so pervasive that no one dares speak up and do something different? All I did was walk into a party wearing something pink, when everyone else was wearing winter tones and I got some heckling out of it. What about standing up to protesters who are protesting because they want to be seen as being with the times, but don't really understand what is at stake and why a jury made the decision which they did? Or about being bold in standing up for beliefs, I'm not the best at this, but I want to do better.
   We live in a world where trends like shoulder pads, skinny jeans and ugly sweaters all come and go leaving all of us trying harder and harder to keep up with the changes. These trends won't make us happy, even if we think we're fitting in. Instead we are left without much left in our pocket book and nothing in our closet we feel safe wearing.
    These trends also occur much too often in the political realm. I name political correctness for one. I'm completely behind respecting everyone, but why doesn't p.c. extend to police officers and a legal system that are trying to respect and protect the rights of all.
    I talked with a friend from town that farms and is part of the Bureau for Land Management yesterday. He shared that because of the trend of organic and open land ranged meat he loses a 1/3 of the productivity of his land. I agree that less fertilizer is better, but when we lose so much productivity we also lose the ability to help third world countries severely in need of food. I think of the many families I met in Cambodia who went hungry almost more frequently than were fed. I think of families I've heard of in the Dominican Republic and many other places in the world in need of food. We have such a cocky, self-assured mindset in the U.S that fads and trends will bring us happiness, but what happens when the fad passes?
   It seems this country has silenced the majority of Judeo-Christians who have truth, but fear to share it. Please don't be afraid to wear the pink pajamas even if you think you're sticking out, in reality you have a large group of people cheering you on.

Someone has to stand up

 
This last semester I had the opportunity to be a teaching fellow in a Modern Western Civ class. One week we had a discussion about the Holocaust and the choices many people made leading up to the death of millions of people. I asked the class if they thought something similar could happen today. They said that if they respected a leader enough or if enough people just didn't care. I'm afraid we're reaching that point again.
   I would like to share the story of Martin Niemoller who came out as a political foe of Adolf Hitler. I want to share the whole story of the man who shared the sound bite "First they came for the Socialists"


Martin Niemöller, a prominent Protestant pastor who opposed the Nazi regime. He spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps. Germany, 1937.
Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) was a prominent Protestant pastor who emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps.
Niemöller is perhaps best remembered for the quotation:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
 
  his point was that Germans—in particular, he believed, the leaders of the Protestant churches—had been complicit through their silence in the Nazi imprisonment, persecution, and murder of millions of people.

When we don't speak out when it is someone else, we are complicit in their suffering and laying the ground work in our own suffering...

My talk of standing up sounds so heroic and yes there is a certain measure of actually standing up for beliefs, for telling someone no if their actions go against your moral or ethic code.  Or not believing what the news is trying to feed you.

And there is another way to stand up, to not be another person who implicitly allows "anything goes".  That is raising your children to respect the word 'No" to raise them with love, discipline and boundaries, help them understand that life isn't always hard and it's not meant to be easy. We live in a world with trophies for every kid who participates, with kids who bad-mouth policemen and students who have their parents make excuses for them. I just came across the story of a 12 yr old boy who might face life in prison for killing his father's pregnant fiance. How is this possible? Because we live in a time when the world says anything goes... We must begin telling our children 'no' and preparing them for a world where they have to work for them to succeed. I love this quote:





We have the power to change the world, if only we will empower ourselves to teach the children in our sphere. I have never raised children of my own flesh and blood, but I have tutored and worked with a young man since he was very young, I've worked with debate students since my junior year in high school (I'm now a super senior in college) and I teach 15 yr olds in Sunday School. I have a wide sphere of teenager influence. Which means I too need to do my part in helping instill in them a strong work ethic and a desire for a better world that they can be successful in. We each can use our sphere of influence to help children and remind ourselves that discipline simply sets us free.

An Introduction to My Take on this Crisis

  Do we even know what this flag even means anymore? Many have called it a rascist symbol. Those who tell you that have a far from patriotic agenda for this country. This flag stands for the dream of the Founders, that liberty truly could be for everyone. This country has fought so many wars in defense of the land of the free...this IS a blessed land, but only as much as we remain a brave, covenant keeping people. A people who believe that kindness, understanding and empathy must rule the day.

  We are facing a crisis in our Nation. This crisis is not directly linked to guns or fighting in the streets or news media sites or the economy. This crisis is linked directly to a mind-set, a mind-set that anything we hear is true, anything the government does is right..or wrong depending on your political leaning. We live in a world where we don't teach our children to think for themselves. Gone are the days of sitting around the table and discussing how the world works and how we can influence the world. I've enjoyed watching the show "Blue Bloods" with my family as each episode shows a family dinner with discussions of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and rights accorded to each person in the legal, justice system. The nephews in the show, boys as young as eight are learning about rights, justice and how the world isn't always fair, but we can be fair. If we are to survive this crisis we must start asking the hard questions, having the discussions and learning how we can be fair.

   Right now we face fighting in the streets, the Ferguson case has torn communities apart. I read the words of an 83 yr old black man who thinks that those rioting in the streets can do better.  I think his message applies to all of us, are we lying to ourselves to get gain or do we see the world as it really is. I apologize for his language, but I feel his message is quite powerful.

  "You blame white people for your ignorance, criminal acts, unemployed laziness, etc.
-You blame white people for 89% of the prisons in America being full of blacks. They did nothing wrong, the racists white cops framed them all, right? No chance at school, no chance for college, military, employment?
 More n*****s kill n*****s, than n*****s killing whites, whites killing n*****s, and whites killing whites….COMBINED. I find this astounding.
-It's not white peoples' faults, the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by a white man years ago. You can go to school, get a job, buy a house, and vote, JUST LIKE WHITE FOLKS!!!! You are not a slave, you are not discriminated against! Slavery is abolished, and nobody alive today, was alive when it was popular. Get over it! You are discriminated against because you are a criminal, sorry-assed n*****. Otherwise, black Americans are treated like everyone else.
-If you choose to create "baby daddy and baby mama", and fake disabilities as an excuse for laziness to draw social security disability…… instead of husband, wife, family, job, mortgage, it's YOUR FAULT, not white folks. And there are a lot of proud black Americans that will tell you the same, as I AM ONE OF THEM!!!
-Remember, the way you act on the camera, is remembered by everyone who sees it. They will never forget it. It shows them how you, as the black race, respond to situations that don’t particularly go the way you think they should. It will become a reference standard, something they expect from you when the next media report doesn’t go your way. Stop being stupid n*****s, and be a proud black American. My parents raised me well, but they were wrong about one thing, I am not a n*****.
  After I die, I have asked my children to publish my writings, and include my name. Although I am not expecting any miracles, I can only hope that Americans will stop blaming color, start blaming criminals, and see people for what they really are. We have too many countries that want us dead. We should not be fighting each other."

We can't blame others for the choices we make. Too many in the world today are quick to point fingers at everyone else instead of taking responsibility for their own actions. At some point we have to stand up and say no!

We have people protesting all across the nation. I support protesting, I support the rights accorded by the First Amendment to everyone. I simply want to ask one little thing? Do you know what those rights really are? Do you know those rights guarantee you the right to freedom of speech, but it doesn't eradicate the consequences.

  We live in a world that is trying to eradicate consequences. The media, the government and popular culture has gotten together and tells us anything goes. We can allow marijuana, we can allow gay marriage, we can do whatever we want to do, don't pay your bills, the government will take care of it. Don't worry about health care the government will pay for it. Don't care about my opinion because it is unfair to the minority. I am not calling for persecution or prosecution for those who think differently than myself, but I am asking that others respect my ideas and my beliefs.

    Dear peers and those of generations in the world today. We face a battle, not of guns or bombs, but of standing firm. The world has crossed so many lines, yet many stand aside and think it won't get worse. I promise you it will. One day we will pay the price for this "anything goes" mentality.

   I've spoken many things, but the one thing I want anyone who reads this blog to think about is...we all have choices and there are consequences to those choices. Please oh please when you hear something on the radio or on the news don't reach for your hot button reaction, think about how different acts that are passed will affect us years and decades down the rode. Change is coming, our actions today determine whether we will have a world for our children to live in.
